Spotlight Item ~ Sarah

Spotlight Item: Sarah

If you haven’t already noticed, each one of the Rapunzel girls has their own, individual style. Sarah’s style tends to lean more toward the rocker cool style, with a little flower-child mixed in. You won’t catch Sarah in anything too girly…don’t even talk to her about pink. So it’s no surprise that Sarah picked Current/Elliott’s  “The Freshman” Leopard Tee as her Spotlight Item.

“I love the print and also the fact that the leopard isn’t too bold or overstated. The washed look is probably my favorite part. There’s nothing better than throwing on a new top that feels like it’s been your favorite shirt for years. I’d probably wear it with some skinnies and combat boots, then add a funky bright necklace.”-Sarah

Stephanie’s Style Icon: Jessica Alba

blog
Our store manager Stephanie has a style of her own. Her relaxed, beach-girl style has remained intact throughout all the passing trends at Rapunzel’s Closet. But every once in a while, Stephanie likes to draw inspiration from her favorite fashion icon—Jessica Alba.

Jessica Alba is your classic California girl and her style mirrors her laid-back, West Coast upbringing. Being a mother of two, it wouldn’t make sense that Jessica has a lot of time to focus on her style. Yet in every paparazzi picture, we can’t help but notice that Jessica looks like she’s walking straight off of a movie set. So with that, Stephanie decided to create her own Alba-inspired look using some of her favorite brands (::: cough :::Jen’s Pirate booty :::cough:::)
blog
Denim shorts are a must-have for any Florida (or California) girl. They can easily go from day time errands to a casual beach-bar at night. The AG Jeans Hailey Ex-Boyfriend cut-offs are a store favorite. Stephanie chose the Jen’s Pirate Booty Peace Tank with the Monrow Military Trench to go with the cut-off. The femininity of the tank is off-set by the masculine look of the trench—together making an outfit worthy of a Jessica Alba street-style look. Add a CC Design Tassel Necklace and you’re ready for a sidewalk runway!

Come check out our other styles at Rapunzel’s Closet and become your own style icon! We’ll see you soon!

AG Jeans Hailey Ex-Boyfriend Cutoff in 15-year wash-$187.00
Jen’s Pirate Booty Peace Tank: $154.00
Monrow Military Trench: $220.00
CC Design Tassel Necklace – Black: $110.00

Steal This Look: Everybody Loves A New Girl
blog

Zooey Deschanel has slowly started to take over the world. Her quirky, down-to-earth-girl roles have gotten attention from boys and girls alike. Boys like her ability to hang with the guys and girls like her unique style which mirrors the classy pin-ups of days past. So for this week’s “Steal This Look,” we took one of Zooey’s signature, girly looks and re-created it using one of our most trendy brands.

While Zooey can opt for a more tomboy style at times, she has also become known for her flirty dresses that look like something out of a sixties, Annette Funicello film. When a MinkPink shipment arrived with the Seminyak Shirt Dress, we couldn’t help but immediately picture Zooey rocking it with a pair of Converse or ballet flats. At a cool $79.00, you can save a few bucks and pick up a CD from her band She & Him! (We’re all about acting the part!) blog The navy and white polka dot is a classic ode to the vintage styles that Zooey has made it clear that she is a fan of. Whether you choose to wear the Seminyak dress with sneakers or your favorite TKEES, it promises to demand attention…just try to fight the urge to twirl too much!

MinkPink Seminyak Dress: $79.00
Palm Beach Lately Arrow Necklace: $78.00

Hallie’s Style Icon ~ Jennifer Aniston
blog“I feel sexy in my jeans and wearing my boyfriend’s T-shirt”-Jennifer Aniston

Jennifer Aniston has been molding her casual-sexy style since she was immortalized as Rachel Green on Friends. Most people find themselves in the category of either wanting to marry her, wanting her as a best friend, or wanting her style—our store Buyer, Hallie, considers herself the latter group.

Jen has started a revolution for the girls who feel their best in jeans and a t-shirt—as her quote above states. Hallie can’t help but appreciate Jen’s effortless style that always seems to flatter and impress—and with that, we had her create an outfit as “An Ode to Aniston.” blog

As of late, Jen can be seen in her signature boyfriend crops, basic tees, and oversized-yet tailored blazers. We re-created her styles by throwing our Elizabeth and James Heather Crepe Blazer over a basic James Perse tee and paired it with a pair of the distressed AG Ex-Boyfriend Crops. Never one to over-accessorize, we continued to channel Jennifer by adding a CC Design Buddha necklace and a pair of  TKEES Duos in Burnt Toast.

So take a cue from Jennifer and create your own sexy, yet simple outfit at Rapunzel’s Closet! Maybe bring a “Friend” or two! 😉

Elizabeth and James Crepe Blazer-$495.00
James Perse Casual V-neck Tee-$64.00
AG Ex-Boyfriend Crop in 19-year wash-$205.00
CC Design Buddha Necklace-$78.00
TKEES Duos in Burnt Toast-$50.00

Kristen’s Fashion Icon: Reese Witherspoon
blog

America’s Sweetheart, Reese Witherspoon, has been winning over audiences since she arrived on the Hollywood scene in the late nineties. Her signature blonde hair and pearly white smile has helped make her the classic girl-next-door. As if that’s not enough – she is an Academy Award winning actress and mother of three!

Her casual look is comfortable and stylish—which is why Kristen chose Reese as her style icon. Kristen, being a huge fan of scarves and comfy-cool pieces, considers Reese’s style as one to be coveted. To prove how simple it is to dress like your favorite fashion muse, we had Kristen put together a look that she can see Reese in. Let’s see what she came up with…
blog

On top, she chose the SUSS Elin Henley in white. The fitted style is offset by the drawstring James Perse Cargo Pant. These pants are a staple in any wardrobe. They look great with a pair of TKEES Flip Flops or even with a cute espadrille. To add some color, Kristen added a Love Quotes Scarf in the color, Hermes Orange. The bright orange compliments the basic colors of the outfit and adds a preppy twist.

Stop by Rapunzel’s Closet and create your own icon-inspired look so you can become your own fashion icon!

Decade: An Ode From The Palm Beach Daily News

30 Oct

We had the pleasure of meeting with the Palm Beach Daily News Fashion Editor Robert Janjigian this past September during Fashion Week in New York. He wrote this fabulous article about Rapunzel’s Closet, Owner Randi Siegal and Buyer (not co-owner) Hallie Rosenthal. We wanted to share it with you here! We hope you enjoy reading it as much as we did. blog

Rapunzel’s celebrates 10th milestone

From gift shop to with-it women’s boutique and children’s store, the retail businesses established by Randi Siegal have evolved and expanded.

By Robert Janjigian

Randi Evans was single and 26 when she opened her first island business, Rapunzel’s of Palm Beach, a Royal Poinciana Way gift shop, in September 2002.

Over the next decade, Evans married, changed her name to Siegal, became a mother of two and shifted the focus of her business from gifts to apparel for women and later, for children and so-called tweens.

And she took on a partner, former customer Hallie Rosenthal, whose parents live in the area, to help run the growing business.

Today, Siegal and Rosenthal spend most of the year piloting the retail business operations from their homes in Manhattan.

In November 2003, Siegal opened the first Rapunzel’s Closet a few doors down from Rapunzel’s of Palm Beach, after the overwhemingly positive response to the sale of a few then-new-to-the-market Juicy Couture tracksuits and T-shirts at the gift store.

A month later, Rapunzel’s Closet debuted a second, larger boutique at 326 S. County Road.

Rapunzel’s Closet, which carried Juicy Couture exclusively on the island for a season or two, was conceived as a place for Palm Beach women to shop for the latest styles of jeans.

“We did a great business in Juicy Couture, which eventually went into department stores and then opened retail locations across the country, including Worth Avenue,” said Siegal. “We gradually stopped selling Juicy when it became available everywhere.”

But it is jeans that continue to be the boutiques’ “bread and butter.”

“White jeans are still our No. 1 seller,” said Rosenthal.

“At the time, the premium denim market was just exploding, and there was really no store in town carrying the new jeans brands,” said Siegal. “It was great timing and the stores really took off.”

They also made a big push into e-commerce, launching their ShopRapunzels.com website in 2004.

“We were heavily invested in e-tail,” said Siegal. “And it brought us a lot of attention and business.”

Then, she said, every brand and store around got into e-commerce. “When Amazon really got going, bought Zappos, and flash sites started popping up, we found we couldn’t justify the expense of the website, updating it, putting our focus on it,” said Siegal. “It wasn’t worth the investment.”

“We still have a website, but customers are referred to the stores directly,” said Rosenthal, explaining the benefits: lower overhead, fewer headaches and more personal service.

Five years ago, Siegal exited the gift business, replacing it with Lil Rapunzel’s, a boutique featuring lines of apparel and accessories for infant to “tween” girls. “It was for women like me who were having children,” she said.

The children’s boutique did so well that Siegal and Rosenthal left the original Rapunzel’s space to transform the Royal Poinciana Way branch of Rapunzel’s Closet into a larger Lil Rapunzel’s store, enlarging the South County Road boutique to about twice its initial size.

“We’ve learned so much over the years, and part of that experience has taught us to be flexible and open to evolve,” said Siegal.

“Hallie and I really play off each other,” she said. “And with Hallie on board, the fashion in the store has transitioned, to reflect her taste and mine and the change in how women are dressing.”

“We still have the best jeans, but our selection is more edited, with what we consider the ‘top picks,’” said Rosenthal. “There’s also fewer basics, with collections featuring dressier, higher-priced pieces. We have things for under $10 to as high as $500.”

“With the kid’s clothes, our preferences really show through,” said Siegal. “I love black and slightly edgier things — for myself and for kids, while Hallie has a preppier take on things and favors more color in what she chooses.”

“It seems to work, so I guess we’ll keep going,” she said.

“Rapunzel’s Closet, in a relatively short time, has become one of the anchors of the South County Road business district, a destination boutique that draws local and out-of-town shoppers to the island, bringing a certain vitality and distinctiveness to Palm Beach,” said Patti Sans, president of the Greater South County Road Association.

“The town is lucky to have talented entrepreneurs like Randi Siegal, who build small businesses that serve the needs of Palm Beachers,” said Matthew Natale, president of the Royal Poinciana Association. “I offer my thanks and congratulations.”

Siegal and Rosenthal plan to celebrate the anniversary of the establishment of Rapunzel’s on Dec. 27 with a party to benefit The Society of the Four Arts.

What we wore: In a true visual explanation of their relationship as detailed above by Robert – Randi and Hallie are both wearing versions of Hudson’s Lou Lou Skinny Tuxedo Pant. (NOT Planned!)  Randi is in the black version and Hallie is in the Navy/Orange version. Randi is wearing a Lanston Tank and Hallie is wearing a KAIN Label Pocket Tee. Accessories by Christian Louboutin, Balanciaga, Chanel, Dolce Vita and Rapunzel’s Jewelry Collection.

Trade In Your Heels For Slippers!

10 Oct

blogAs a Buyer who lives in NYC, I’m constantly stalking people on the street to find out what they are wearing. As I rode the subway downtown a couple weeks, I found myself staring at a girl standing across from me. I wanted her outfit from head to toe – and mainly the toe part. She was wearing the Del Toro Smoking Slippers that I had been dying over for months. I’m sure the girl was relieved when I finally stopped staring and asked her if she was in fact wearing the Del Toro Smoking Slippers. Silly me – I didn’t notice the signature grosgrain ribbon at the back heel.

When I got back to the office and did some more research on my new obsession, I was pleased to find out that the Co-Founder and Creative Director Matthew Chevallard spent part of his childhood in Palm Beach, FL. What a perfect match for our stores! We love “local” talent on our fashion floor! Needless to say – our first shipment of Del Toro Smoking Slippers has arrived and they are already a hit!
blogThese shoes embody the term “feminine menswear.” They are a great alternative to the ballet flat you’ve been wearing for years and they are perfectly tailored to go with your favorite skinny jeans, pencil skirts and little dresses. Trade in your heels for a pair of these slippers, you won’t be disappointed! (I’m not!)

The Calm Before the Coterie Storm

17 Sep

blog
As the Buyer for Rapunzel’s Closet and Lil Rapunzel’s you don’t often get to see as much of me “personally” in and around the stores.  However you do see a whole lot of my style and my “voice” on our selling floor. As I prepare for Spring Coterie our biggest and busiest show of our selling year, I decided to give you a sneak peek into how I get ready for the shows.

Today is what I like to call the “Calm Before the Coterie Storm.” It’s the day that I spend cleaning out files and cleaning off my desk in preparation for all of the line sheets, look books and order forms that will be covering every surface of office space in the next two days. Prior to this day I’ve been pouring over selling reports, researching fashion week trends and talking to our selling staff about what did and did not work last Spring.

About 4 weeks ago I started making our appointments. I’m a creature of habit and I tend to like to see the same vendors at the same times of the day. After 5 years of going to these shows I’ve learned the best and the worst times to see each vendor. I love to start Day 1 with Splendid and Ella Moss. These booths get crazy as the day progresses so getting them checked off the list first thing is key. Next, I try to tackle the denim vendors. I always like to hit up the Citizens of Humanity booth during lunch time. They have the BEST boxed lunch and the cookies are yummy! The rest of the day is spent visiting Joie, Vince, Minnie Rose and Michael Stars and tons more vendors we currently carry. Day 2 is the day that is spent walking around and checking out new talent for the store. I don’t schedule too many appointments this day because I really want to devote time to learning about new vendors.

blog(I’m in the middle taking notes of course!)

While I’d like to tell you that I spend hours planning what fashionable ensemble I’m going to wear to the show, sadly it’s really more of a game time decision. I follow the 3 C’s of show dressing – comfort, cold and chic. Comfort because it’s a long day walking around from booth to booth. (I leave my 6″ heels at home) Cold because ineveitably one side of the show floor is always freezing so I need a layering piece. Chic because I still have to look chic!  Afterall – this is the fashion business! I always try to wear clothing that represents Rapunzel’s Closet which isn’t hard seeing as my personal closet could be called Rapunzel’s Closet.

My favorite part of the day is when we get to sit down and recap the show. I like to hear what my colleagues think about what we picked for the store and what the peak and the pit of the day was for them. This part of the day usually revolves around some fabulous dinner out in NYC with Rapunzel (Randi) and the girls who are visiting from the store.

It’s true that I have a very fun job, but it’s also a lot of hard work. To be a successful buyer you have to be organized, take good notes, listen to the customers and the selling staff and most important – when the storm hits don’t take yourself too seriously!
