The Right Jean Fit for that Curvier Body!

Working in an office full of beautiful girls, none of whom are above a size 28 jean, it can sometimes be hard (or intimidating!) to get advice on the right fit for my size 30/31 figure. But after 3 ½ years of trying on the great selection of jeans, from 1921 Jeans to William Rast, that we carry at Rapunzel’s, I must say that I’ve finally settled on the brands and styles that most complement my body and that fit my varying style moods. For starters, my day-in, day-out absolute fav is Paige Jeans. The Hollywood Hills Bootcut style in a medium
or dark wash works perfectly with pretty much anything. For a casual day look, I pair mine with a simple LNA tee, a little cardigan like the Juicy Couture Striped Cardi and some easy flats like the Dolce Vita Devas. What I love about this cut is that the Hollywood Hills come up a little higher than the Laurel Canyon style which is great for avoiding the dreaded “muffin top” affect. Something to remember however, Paige Jeans run a bit small (particularly in the darker washes) and many of us have to go up a size. The fit is so great it’s well worth the bump to the morale though! Plus, Paige Gellar, who started Paige Jeans four years ago, was a long time fit model for almost all the major jean labels out there today, so she really knows a thing or two about how a jean should fit. Her struggle and subsequent recovery from an eating disorder has made her a role model for embracing your inner beauty and her line reflects her desire to create jeans for every”body.”
I think it’s a myth that curvier girls can’t wear skinny jeans. It’s really about finding a good fit, balancing out the proportions with the right top and having the confidence to pull it all off! My staple skinny jeans are the 7 for All Mankind Roxanne jeans in the New York Dark Wash. These jeans are super stretchy and their 13″ leg opening is skinny enough to stuff into boots but still wide enough to look good with a pair of ballerina slippers. (Or try the similar Edie style which has an extra 1″ at the leg opening!) The only downside to these jeans is their lower rise which sometimes shows off a little too much of my Hanky Pankies (!) but that’s easily remedied by wearing longer tops. And the right type of top is something like the Joie Alicia tank, which has a looser fit and looks great either loosely tucked in or left out and flowy with. A fun Love Quotes Scarf adds a punch of color and this outfit (paired with some heels) easily moves from day to night!
My latest pick is the very fashion forward (thank you Katie Holmes!) Current/Elliot boyfriend jeans. It’s about time that the loose, holey, completely worn out jeans that I want to throw on everyday can now be dressed up and worn right into the office (okay, okay, only if you have a job in an equally fashion forward office!) And how great
is it that my usual size 30 self can go down to a 29 and know that I could even fit the 28 if I really wanted to? Love it! I find myself wearing these most with gladiator sandals like the Sam Edelman Ginnies, and some girlie top like his 7 for All Mankind Epaulette blouse. The real trick to pulling off these jeans is to remember that they are essentially supposed to be your boyfriend’s jeans and you need to counterbalance their boyish fit with your more feminine accessories (a little lace top, a great pair of heels, etc.) They do run big and they are supposed to be baggy, so be sure pair them with tops that are a little more fitted and shoes that aren’t too heavy looking!
At the end of the day, there’s nothing more unflattering than jeans that don’t fit properly. Keep in mind that chances are good that you are different jean sizes in different styles/brands, so don’t get caught up sticking to one size. With all the great options out there, there really is no excuse for not finding something fabulous that will work with your unique body type and particular fashion sensibility!
